Discurs d'obertura de la Conferència de la International
Christian Maritime Association / Barcelona

Benvolguts senyors i senyores,
En primer lloc, voldria excusar l’assistència del president
del Govern autònom de Catalunya, el Molt Honorable Sr. Salvador Illa, que m’ha
demanat l’honor de substituir-lo en aquesta trobada de la International Christian Maritime Association que se celebra aquests dies a Barcelona.
Benvinguts, doncs, a Barcelona, a Catalunya, un país amb una llarguíssima
tradició marítima i una intensíssima activitat portuària en aquests moments.
Aquests dies, i sempre, Barcelona i Catalunya han de ser “la teva llar lluny de
la llar”, com diu el conegut lema d’Stella Maris.
Al programa de la conferència mundial hi haurà diverses oportunitats
per reflexionar sobre les prioritats de les organitzacions cristianes que
atenen navegants arreu del món. Més enllà del “què”, és a dir, de ser eficients
en l’atenció als homes i dones de mar que arriben als nostres ports, m’ha
semblat que us plantegeu sobretot “per a què” i, especialment, “cap a on” cal
anar. Convé fer aquestes aturades de tant en tant. Hi hauria el perill de ser
engolits pels processos i oblidar-nos que tractem amb persones. Oblidar-nos que
volem fer tot el que està en les nostres mans per bastir de suport i companyia,
de llar, a persones per a les quals la seva feina els obliga a la distància.
També a les seves famílies. Oferir la màxima proximitat possible quan la
distància és més evident. Em temo que el que reflexioneu aquí serà útil, si
aixequem aquesta mirada, si “naveguem pel canvi”, serà útil també a tots els
que ens passem el dia en terra ferma. Navegant, com a molt, per internet.
Desaprofitant la manca de distància física que ofereixen les nostres ciutats
generant noves solituds i distàncies. N’hem d’aprendre molt, de la gent de mar!
També he vist que visitareu la Sagrada Família, que és a
punt de culminar la seva torre més alta, la de Jesucrist. Per nosaltres, ja és
un símbol: tots els llenguatges de l’art, des de l’arquitectura fins a
l’escultura, des del joc de l’espai i de la llum, es posen al servei dels
valors que el temple vol projectar cap al món. Ben amunt, com un far.
Sentiu-vos acollits també, doncs, per la magnífica obra de Gaudí que parla per
tots nosaltres.
Tant de bo el mar, però, ens unís més. Tant de bo hi anéssim
a pescar o a transportar. O a gaudir-ne. Però avui el mar també és un fidel
reflex dels nostres desastres. Recull l’escalfament climàtic i en rebem les
tràgiques conseqüències quan es formen les tempestes, cada vegada pitjors. El
mar acull també els cossos que vergonyosament cauen morts en les travessies de
la fam o de l’exili que provoquen el desenvolupament desigual de països
separats (sí, separats i no units) pel mar. El canvi també ha de passar per
aquí. És un repte que ens convoca a tots: les organitzacions civils i els
governs, els països més pobres i els més rics, els cristians moguts per la fe o
tothom qui trobem pel camí, cregui el que cregui. Això és el que Catalunya vol
fer aquí, en aquesta terra, i vol ajudar a fer en la mesura de les seves
possibilitats arreu del món. Ens tenen, doncs, a la seva disposició.

Firstly, I
would like to apologise for the absence of the Rt. Hon. Mr Salvador Illa, the First
Minister of the Government of Catalonia, who has asked me to stand in for him
at this meeting of the International Christian Maritime Association taking
place in Barcelona over the next few days. So I would like to welcome you to
Barcelona and to Catalonia, a country with a long seafaring tradition and extremely
busy ports at the present time. Now and forever, we hope Barcelona and
Catalonia will be your “your home, away from home” as Stella Maris’s well-known
motto puts it.
The world Conference’s
programme will furnish a number of opportunities to discuss the priorities of
Christian organisations caring for seafarers worldwide. Apart from the “what”,
i.e. efficient service for the men and women sailors who come into our ports, I
think it is also useful to think more importantly about the “what for” and in
particular “where” we need to get to. It is worth pausing to consider this from
time to time. There is a danger of getting caught up in processes and losing
sight of the fact that we are dealing with people. We ought to bear in mind
that our role is to do everything we can to provide support, companionship and
a home to people whose work takes them far from their home. This also includes their
families. We should be as approachable as possible when distance is most apparent.
I believe that the issues you are to address here will be constructive. If we look
up, if we “navigate through change”, it will also be helpful for all of us who stay
on dry land, navigating at most online and failing to embrace the absence of
physical distance in our towns and cities while generating new forms of loneliness
and separation. We can learn a lot from seafarers!
I have also
noticed that you are to visit the Sagrada Familia which is about to complete
its tallest tower, the one dedicated to Jesus Christ. This is now a symbol for
us: all the languages of art, ranging from architecture to sculpture, from the
interplay of space and light, are deployed to further the values the church seeks
to convey to the world. It stands high above us like a beacon. Please additionally
feel welcomed, then, by Gaudí’s masterpiece which speaks to all of us.
Nonetheless,
I wish the sea would bring us closer together. I wish we could go out to sea to
fish or carry goods. Or just to enjoy it. Yet nowadays, the sea is also a mirror
image of our disasters. It bears the scars of global warming and we experience
its devastating consequences when storms rage, each worse than its predecessor.
The sea also receives the bodies of people who shockingly die on their journeys
fleeing hunger or in forced migration brought about by the unequal development
of countries separated (yes, separated and not united) by the sea. Change also needs
to happen here. It is a challenge which involves us all: civil organisations
and governments, the poorest and richest countries, Christians prompted by
their faith and everyone else we meet along the way, no matter what their
beliefs may be. This is what Catalonia seeks to do here in this region, and also
aspires to help achieve to the extent that it can all over the world. We will thus
be happy to assist you to the best of our abilities.
So I trust
you will have a rewarding conference and a pleasant stay. Thank you very much!
